Senior Tax Services Accountant at Hale & Associates, PS

Small Public Accounting practice seeks Senior Tax Accountant. To qualify you must have 5+ years of tax accounting work including individual, corporate and partnership returns. Bachelor’s degree in accounting and CPA/Enrolled Agent certification a plus. Desired software skills include Microsoft Excel, Word, QuickBooks, Ultra Tax, and Accounting CS.

Responsibilities include:

  • Efficiently plan and manage client engagements from start to finish, including year-end and quarterly accounting engagements for various business entities, including sole proprietors, corporations, S-corporations, and partnerships.
  • Preparation of income tax returns (all entity types), preparation of quarterly and annual
    payroll tax returns (941, electronic transmittal of ESD and L&I reports, W-2, 1099, 940,
    preparation of Personal Property Tax Affidavit).
  • Preparation of Trust, Gift and Estate tax returns is a plus.
  • Assistance with Federal and State business and individual tax compliance audits.
  • Interaction with clients and their advisors relating to compliance and tax planning issues.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Accounting Responsibilities
1. Oversee all accounting and related financial reporting systems, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
2. Establish and maintain internal controls for receipt and recording of revenue/assets and disbursement and recording of expenses/liabilities
3. Coordinate all financial and regulatory audits
4. Manage cash and forecast cash flow to ensure availability of funds and maximization of income

II. Reporting

1. Analyze financial data and prepare internal financial statements in a timely manner to keep management and Board apprised of the organization’s financial status
2. Coordinate preparation of Forms 990 and 990-T tax returns
3. Prepare and/or review reports, meeting required deadlines, to external organizations; including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Washington State Insurance Commissioner, the State of Washington tax and business filings and Federal Tax filings

III. Managing Accounting Department

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Finance Director, HomeSight

POSITION SUMMARY:
As a member of the leadership team, the Finance Director reports directly to the Executive Director and provides strategic financial planning and leadership to ensure the current and future financial well-being of HomeSight. The Finance Director leads business growth and addresses business trends, changes, and opportunities that may affect HomeSight.

The Finance Director leads daily financial operations of a $3.5M budget and $35M in assets, and ensures that effective and compliant accounting policies and procedures are implemented and maintained. This position supervises two staff members responsible for accounting, cash management, and loan servicing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Organizational Strategy and Results:
• In collaboration with the ED, the COO, and leadership team, develops the strategy to
ensure that HomeSight has the financial resources needed to achieve its current and
future goals, while identifying opportunities and mitigating risk.
• This Finance Director develops new strategies and implements plans for diversifying
capital and revenue sources, and increasing earned income
• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with key financial partners
including funders, investors, government agencies, consultants and vendors.

Financial Management and Reporting:
• Oversees and implements organizational budgeting, accounting, and cash management
to ensure accurate reporting, interpretation and analysis of financial results in
conjunction with forecasts and long range plans. Manages and works with outside audit
firm on the year-end audit, and prepares annual tax returns.
• Establishes and maintains controls to safeguard assets; documents and recommends
improvements to internal financial policies and procedures.
• Prepares consolidated financial statements; provides reports, as needed.

Daily Financial Operations
• Prepares annual budget, analyzes impact of budget requests, projects revenue, and
produces reports; analyzes actual results against budget and researches variances;
interacts with departments on an on-going basis to provide guidance on budget and
accounting policies.
• Develops and monitors cash controls and accounting policies and procedures. Reviews,
analyzes and revises internal control systems, providing documentation and training as
necessary.
• Reports on financial status and responds to inquiries from the leadership team.
• Develops consolidated financial statements and various management reports to comply
with outside regulatory agencies and to provide the leadership team with timely
information; manages annual audits and coordinates preparation of annual form 990
providing all necessary schedules to the tax preparer.
• Oversees monthly reconciliation and maintenance of all general ledger accounts in
preparation of month-end financial statements, including journal entries, estimates
relating to normal entries (i.e., depreciation rates & methods, discount on contributions
receivable, accounts receivable allowances, etc.) and any special schedules required.
• Evaluates significant accounting adjustments and the impact of adjustments on records,
reports, and year-end results.
• Prepares budget projections and financial reports for government and private funders
and other investors; supervises preparation of financial summaries and statements for
reports to funders and grantors.
• Prepares financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
• Supervises the accountant and loan servicing staff for the mortgage portfolio.
• Manages the overall operation of the Finance department including supervising and
training staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• At least 7 years of demonstrated relevant finance and accounting experience in a
nonprofit environment, including extensive experience with the MIP fund Accounting
system.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required. CPA is desirable.
• Experience in financial management of federal, state, and local government grants and
contracts required.
Effective in working with a diverse and multicultural team of colleagues and customers.
• Direct work experience with budgets, forecasting, financial analysis, and fund
accounting is essential.
• Solid knowledge of local, state and federal tax laws and regulations required.
• Knowledge of real estate, banking, and mortgage is helpful.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare clear, accurate, well-organized written and financial
reports and to communicate verbally in an effective and concise manner.
• Commitment to community development, helping low income communities and strong
work ethic and understanding of nonprofit business models.
• Professional demeanor and willingness to cooperatively participate on a team in a
mission-based organization.

Accounting & Finance Manager for Make-A-Wish Foundation

POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for leading all day-to-day accounting operations including: month-end close, reporting, variance analyses and cash management. Expected to review and implement policies and procedures to maintain internal controls and coordinate clean audits while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the financial systems and reports. Strong ability to assess workflow and to identify and implement process efficiencies that maximize technology.

ACCOUNTING RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ensure financial integrity of the general ledger.
• Review all accounting transactions (including payroll and the weekly check run) to ensure proper account coding and approvals.
• Review fixed asset tracking and regional accounting.
• Review all journal entries and account reconciliations.
• Ensure timely and accurate completion of month-end close.
• Produce monthly consolidated and regional financial statements.
• Manage and coordinate the annual financial statement audit and the annual Make-A-Wish America Compliance Audit.
• Ensure segregation of duties and proper accounting controls are in-place for all accounting processes and transactions throughout the region.
• Ensure compliance with payroll and tax regulations.
• Coordinate preparation of the annual 990 tax return with the external CPA. Ensure that it is approved by the Finance Committee/Board and filed in a timely manner.
• Work with Accountant and Director of Data & Information Services to automate routine accounting processes.
• Supervise the Accountant. Provide direction and feedback on a continual basis.
• Annually review and update all written finance & accounting policies.

FINANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide a monthly variance analysis of the chapter’s performance.
• Assist the CFO in facilitating the annual budgeting process with staff and management.
• Work with the Director of Data & Information Services to upload the approved budget, by functional expense breakout, into Financial Edge.
• Review daily cash inflows and outflows. Assist the CFO in managing the organization’s overall cash flow and its investments.
• Ensure compliance with the Make-A-Wish America Finance Manual, National Performance Standards and all chapter –related policies and procedures.
• Assist the CFO with the monthly Finance Committee meetings. Tasks include: scheduling meetings, agenda creation, documenting meeting minutes and presenting the financial statements.
• Oversee the time-study process for deriving functional expense percentages.
• Ensure financial data is accurate in Financial Edge before it is reviewed by Make-A-Wish America. Verify quarterly financial statements and other key chapter data.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• BA/BS in Accounting or Finance
• CPA strongly preferred
• 5+ years of progressive experience and responsibility
• 2+ years of Management/Supervisory experience
• Non-profit accounting experience REQUIRED
• Thorough understanding of accrual accounting
• Deep knowledge of financial systems & familiarity with fundraising databases
• Experience using advanced Excel functions such as pivot tables, vlookups, etc.
• Continuously seeks information in order to remain knowledgeable of changing rules and regulations that may impact the organization.
• Demonstrated ability and desire to analyze complex scenarios, draw logical conclusions and present outcomes to a variety of audiences.
• Ability to meet deadlines while managing a wide variety of projects simultaneously.
